OATMEAL PARATHAS WITH AMBA HALDI PICKLE!



Oatmeal Parathas

Oats are not only tastes delicious, it's good for your heart. Research conducted over the past 40 years shows that eating 3g of soluble fiber daily from oatmeal, in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Oatmeal can help lower your total cholesterol, and LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and that can help keep your arteries clean and healthy.More info here.




Oatmeal-Veggie Parathas:
Here are wonderful tasting nutritious Parathas for breakfast or for anytime you will love .With Pickle or Yogurt,they are absolutely delicious.You can make them day before and heat in the morning and they freeze well too.



How to make them:Makes 8 Parathas.
Measure 1 cup of Quaker old fashioned Oats and grind them in a blender to get a smooth powder.


Add this Oatmeal powder to 2 cups of wheat flour/Atta along with 1 large finely minced onions,2 tsp ginger grated,1/2 cup grated Carrots,1/4 cup Methi leaves or 2 tbsp Kasuri Methi,salt, 1/2 tsp chill flakes or powder or minced green chillies,1/4 tsp Turmeric, 1 tsp Coriander seeds powder,1 tsp cumin seeds powder,1 tsp Mango powder,2 tbsp Cilantro,1 tbsp minced Mint leaves,1/2 tsp Garam Masala.


Mix all these well to a stiff dough without water at first.Onions tend to leave water when mixed with salt,so water should be added only if necessary.Divide the dough into 8 pieces,roll out to about 6" circles.Cook on the griddle until golden specks appear both sides with little Canola oil bushed on them.Serve with any pickle you have or with little yogurt for a great breakfast.

When I was in Nashville on vacation,I found this Fresh Turmeric pickle jar in a Indian grocery store.I have never eaten fresh Turmeric,so I bought just one jar to try. I loved it so much that I went back again just to buy 2 more jars of the same.It tastes fabulous!:))

    Bee,Oats are excellent for breads.Parathas get crisp like Thalipeeth because of Oat flour ,really great.Try it:)

  11. Saju,how lucky! I have never seen fresh turmeric here or in India.I love this pickle,they do have a mild turmeric aroma.YUM!:)

  16. Thats a good one Asha. Everybody makes parathas atleast 4 days a week and this would be a great idea to include oats in our menu.
    Have never heard of turmeric pickle and I will check if I can get it here in my place. thanks.

    sra,yes.The minute salt hits the onion,it starts to leave lot of water.You have to finely mince the onion too to avoid holes in the parathas too.Try adding more onion if you like,there is hard a d fast rules!:)

    Leave it to you to make me consider cooking with oats. In their natural state, it's the one food I would rather starve than eat! Ground up though, in the yummy parathas... that looks delicous! Turmeric pickle looks v. interesting too :)

  29. Linda,my kids eat Oatmeal only if mixed with cinnamon,brown sugar!:)
    It is bland,feels like eating grass unless spice it up like this.Try it.You can eat like them like crackers if you bake it until crisp!:D

  35. oats paratha, now that's a first for me :) so creative, sounds yum, does the paratha turn out a bit dry due to oats? would like to try it sometime :)i used my garden eggplants this weekend, was so tasty :)but my zuchini flowers are dropping, any idea why that is so?

  36. i have seen fresh turmeric roots in indian grocery some months back. looking @that big bottle of turmeric pickle i wish i had got some. may be i will check again and post it for coffee's MBP:)
    now coming to parathas, never ever in my wildest dream i would have used oats to make paratas:) and u did say its easy to freeze as wll. i dont like oats that much and its been ages since we had it. ur paratas are definately luring me to change my mind:)

  37. Finally!!! Have you seen fresh turmeric? Lucky,get it next time,it's really very tasty.Oats are bland,hard to eat unless smothered sugar which beats the purpose!!:D
    If you make Parathas in weekend,you can freeze and heat it up in the morning.They almost taste like Thalipeeth.
    Today is the hottest day here Sups,staying put at home.Yesterday kids went to Transformers movie,we just relaxed in a book store after shopping.

    I tried out your Oatmeal parathas for lunch yesterday...I was so impressed! The flavor & aroma was simply amazing...just made a few changes to the recipe. I did not have methi so I used palak instead and skipped the coriander powder, but even then they were really tasty! Thanks for the recipe, it will certainly be a regular at our place now. And I accompanied them with some home made ambe halad pickle...Yum!!! :)
