Papaya scones are my contribution to "A Fruit A Month", which is the brainchild of Maheswari of "Beyond the Usual" blog. Nags of "For the cook in me" is guest hosting this month for AFAM and her fruit of choice is "Papaya". Thanks for hosting Nags!:)

Finally!!! After all the running around the town here for Papaya, we visited a Vietnamese store in the next town last weekend and got 2 cans of Papaya! Canned Papayas taste nowhere near like the real ripe Papaya we used to gobble up in India regularly but I feel lucky to have these cans than nothing at all, beggars can't be choosers!!:D

Canned Papayas!
Fresh Papayas are low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber and Potassium and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Folate. But watch out for the high content of sugar!!! More info at WIKI.

Here they are, my Papaya scones. They are flavorful, not very sweet and makes a perfect breakfast warm or cold with any jam or just sprinkled with powdered sugar. Nuts are optional, gives it a little crunch. I can only imagine how wonderful and aromatic it would be to use the real fresh ripe Papayas in these scones! Use fresh if you can. I don't like any of my desserts too sweet, so these are perfect for me to have on their own with a cup of coffee!:)

Papaya-Pecan Scones:
Recipe for Scones is mostly adapted by Betty Crocker's baking book with my own addition and elimination, makes about 10 scones. You can any kind of chopped fruits and nuts of your choice for variation.

You need:
1 3/4 cup Plain flour,
1/3 cup packed brown sugar,
2 tsp Baking powder,
1/4 tsp salt,

1/3 cup firm unsalted butter or Margarine,(I used the butter),

1 Egg,
1/2 cup Half and half or cream,
1 cup chopped ripe Papaya,
1/4 cup finely chopped Pecans or Walnuts or any nuts.

To bake Scones:
Preheat oven to 400F.
1. Mix flour, sugar, salt and baking pd. Add cut up butter and mix with your fingers until they look like bread crumbs.
2. Add egg and cream beaten together and mix with a wooden spoon just until combined.
3. Stir in Papaya and nuts and mix gently until combined.
4. On a ungreased baking sheets, scoop 1/3 cup of mix and drop them 3" apart from each other. Put it in the oven and bake for 18 mins or until golden brown on top.Do not over bake.
5. Slide them on to a cooling rack gently and immediately and store in a air tight container when cooled for breakfast or light snack. Serve warm or at room temperature with jam or powdered sugar.

Enjoy!:))

Asha here it is really cold that hot coco would be a real warm welcome :-)
How come youcame up with papaya scone. It looks so good. Where is my brain when i was looking for a recipe for papaya .

FH said...

Mansi, use the fresh Papaya if you can get your hands on it for Aroma and flavor and bake the scones. They are absolutely yummy. Canned Papaya is pathetic really!:D

Hahaha! F, I make mixed dry fruit scones often, have posted at FH too. Easy and great for breakfast, you just replace the dry fruit with any fruit, that's all. I used to cook with raw Papaya in India, I love it!:)
Try googling for Papaya recipes, you will get a few. You can make custard and top the fresh Papaya, there is an easy recipe for you!:)

Gorgeous, Ashakka! I actually had a similar idea (believe it or not), but wasn't able to find papaya anywhere at this time of year. Will try these when I can get my hands on some papayas or may substitute other fruits. I LOVE scones!! :)

FH said...

I did Mala! Haha!!
I got Photoshop last month, still don't know how to perfect that but trying!:))

Kalai, I have been trying to get Papaya since last month, finally I found a canned one which just tastes like thin syrup, nothing like real Papaya!:D
Try it, it's easy to make.

Wow...u have come up with a beautiful dish for a difficult fruit like papaya..and the hot cocoa looks superb

FH said...

Namratha, Seema and Ti thanks girls.

Ti, every fruit has it's own benefits and drawbacks. I used to eat a LOT of Papayas in India, two in a day sometimes!:D

FH said...

Meera and Sig, thanks.

I agree Sig, nuts always give any dessert a crunch and makes it nutritious too!:))

FH said...

Hima , EC enjoy the scones. Getting Papaya was a run around specially in a small town like our's but glad I made it at last!:))

Asha, both the entires look lovely..I am still waiting for hubby to get the papaya..:(..not sure if I will be able to send it...but you can always make it...thats unbelievable!..

lakshmi said...

hot cocoa no dark enough for me :D - it should be a deep deep brown - just melted chocolate with a spot (literally just a spot) of milk will do. :D

i am doing 3 miles everyday regularly - need to get to 5 miles :)

Chibog in Chief said...

oh my!! what a great idea!! i have never seen a scone as lovely as this..i will definitely put this on my to cook list..papayas in scones..hmmm that would be bringing the tropics on my table :-)

FH said...

Sri, I don't think it's papaya season anywhere. I just got a can in Asian which doesn't taste anything like real Papaya at all. Hope you get it there, if you don't, don't worry about it!:)

Haha! Lakshmi, you chocolate lover!!!Dump some more Cocoa pd and bits of chocolate, you will be in Heaven!:))
Good for you. Increase the miles slowly. Even I am turning the knob up to make it difficult for me on stationary bike, hurts like Hell!;D

Hi D, hope you try. You can make in the morning too, takes about 45 mins to make it to fresh out of the oven!:)
Hope you read my MeMe you tagged me for, it's in the last post.

I love scones. They make a hearty snack. But I have been sticking to "whole wheat" scones.

Once our kitchen is back online, will try out this recipe with whole wheat.

One of our farm markets in the boston area (not a tropical paradise) does stock on some wonderful maradol papayas. Those are awesome and I just snack on them. M does not like them :-|| (so more for me!!!) So we will try this with fresh papayas!

Thanks for sharing.

PS, my favorite scones here are the cranberry, orange peel scones! :-))

FH said...

Hi Arun, good to see you. Yeah, you can practically use any flour or fruits in these scones. Orange scones sounds wonderful!
How lucky to get fresh Papaya there. Sometimes I see Spanish ones here, half ripe, doesn't look good at all. Enjoy!:))
